Doernbecher Hospital Kiwanis Unit in Oregon and Southwest Washington, Kiwanis Clubs have collaborated with Doernbecher for over 20 years to treat children with cancer. This partnership would not be possible without the tireless dedication and commitment of hundreds of Kiwanians who spend countless hours in the community selling raffle tickets and organizing events, all for the children at Doernbecher.

Neighborhood House brings neighbors together to feed the hungry, house the homeless, and educate young and old. We strengthen community by providing resources to support self-reliance, economic independence and dignity in people of all ages and backgrounds.

Save Old Spectacles (S.O.S.) Program

The Southwest Hills Kiwanis Club participates in an ongoing program to provide people in third world countries with the gift of sight.

History

In 1967 Dr. Sutter Kunkel, a Long Beach optometrist, originated this international Kiwanis cause in order to fulfill a need for eyeglasses in less-developed areas of the world. Due to malnutrition, poor vision is common in most underdeveloped countries, and eyeglasses are essential to performing everyday tasks such as working in the fields, cooking or sewing.
In the past five years over 200 Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Clubs have collected and distributed over 215,000 pairs of usable eyeglasses for use in the third world countries. Our long-range goal is to collect, clean and process a minimum of 100,000 pair per year for this great cause.

How S.O.S. Works

All types of prescription eyeglasses are needed. Any size or shape of men's, women's and children's glasses are recyclable and can be used if they are unbroken and are still in a sound frame. Working with the Mercy Ships International, the glasses are professionally graded as per the prescription and then processed for distribution through their world wide humanitarian program bringing sight to thousands of challenged people around the world.
